Federal funding will support an AI supercomputer, advanced 3D printers, and other cutting-edge technology

NATCHITOCHES, La. — Northwestern State University has been awarded $1.8 million in federal funding to expand technology and research capabilities at its Innovation Park, Congressman Cleo Fields (LA-06) announced.
The funding, awarded through the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), will support Northwestern State University’s Innovation Park Equipment Expansion (IPEX) Project.
The funding request was submitted in collaboration with U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy.
According to the announcement, the $1.8 million investment will allow NSU to purchase cutting-edge equipment for Innovation Park, including an artificial intelligence supercomputer, laser cutters and advanced 3D printers.
“Innovation Park is a cornerstone of STEM education in Northwestern Louisiana,” Fields said. “This funding will expand research and innovation opportunities, empowering students to deepen their STEM expertise and drive groundbreaking discoveries.”
Fields said the investment will also help prepare students for careers in science and technology while strengthening Louisiana’s workforce.
“It will give students the critical skills they need to lead the next wave of scientific and technological innovation, and give Louisiana employers the workforce they need to grow,” Fields said. “I was proud to work alongside Senator Cassidy and Senator Kennedy to bring these resources home to Natchitoches and to ensure Louisiana institutions get their fair share of federal investment in research and workforce development.”
The new equipment is expected to provide NSU students with more hands-on experience in high-demand fields while expanding research and innovation opportunities available through Innovation Park.
University officials also expect to use the enhanced capabilities to strengthen NSU’s ability to attract and retain undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty members.
Beyond the university, the investment could support Louisiana’s broader economic development efforts by helping build a skilled workforce in areas including advanced technology, industrial engineering and biomedical research.
The award was made through NIST’s Congressionally-Identified Projects program (CFDA 11.617).
