After two terms in the U.S. Senate, Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) has lost his Republican primary bid for re-election. He finished third with roughly 24-25% of the vote and will not advance to the June 27 runoff.
Trump-endorsed Rep. Julia Letlow led with about 45%, followed by State Treasurer John Fleming at around 28%. The two will face off for the GOP nomination in the heavily Republican state.
Cassidy, who notably voted to convict President Trump in the 2021 impeachment trial following Jan. 6, became a target for ouster. He is only the second Louisiana senator in 94 years to lose a re-election bid.
In his concession, Cassidy reflected on his 12 years in office and congratulated the advancing candidates. This result highlights the ongoing dynamics within the Republican Party ahead of the 2026 midterms. Louisiana’s Senate seat, long held by Cassidy since he flipped it in 2014, now heads to a competitive runoff.
