Natchitoches, Louisiana — On Saturday, March 28, Cloyd Benjamin, Jr. marked the culmination of an extraordinary career spanning more than four decades in the justice system by announcing his candidacy for Ward 1 City Court Judge.

Benjamin’s career reflects a lifelong commitment to justice, service, and community. He began his journey in law enforcement as the youngest deputy with the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office while simultaneously pursuing his education at Northwestern State University. He later advanced to serve as a federal officer with the Bureau of Prisons before earning his Juris Doctor from Southern University Law Center.

His legal career is distinguished by progressive leadership and broad-based experience across multiple facets of the justice system. Benjamin began as a clerk with the Louisiana State Legislature and the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office, before being appointed City Prosecutor in Shreveport. He went on to practice law with Piper & Associates before founding the Benjamin Law Firm in Natchitoches, where he built a reputation for strong advocacy and community-centered legal service.

Benjamin’s prosecutorial career further solidified his impact. Appointed as Assistant District Attorney by then-District Attorney Van Kyzar, he managed all cases in Natchitoches City Court and prosecuted felony matters in District Court. In 2017, he was elevated to First Assistant District Attorney by District Attorney Billy Joe Harrington, a role he held with distinction until his retirement in February 2026.

A seasoned civil trial and criminal defense attorney, Benjamin brings a rare and comprehensive perspective to the bench, having served as a law enforcement officer, prosecutor, defense attorney, and legal advisor. His depth of experience uniquely equips him to evaluate cases with balance, fairness, and sound judgment.

“As I close one chapter of public service, I am called to continue serving in a new capacity,” said Benjamin. “I am committed to upholding the law with integrity, ensuring fairness in every case, and serving the people of Natchitoches with honor.”

Benjamin’s candidacy represents a continuation of his lifelong dedication to justice, accountability, and the well-being of the community.
