NATCHITOCHES, La. — Student media organizations at Northwestern State University have come together to produce a feature story highlighting the journey and success of NSU alumnus Sherman Desselle, who was recently inducted into the Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts Hall of Fame.
The interview can be viewed here: https://purplemedianetwork.com/22335/showcase/sherman-desselle-inducted-into-capa-hall-of-fame/.
The project was a collaborative effort between The Current Sauce, NSU TV, the Hispanic Student Journalists Association (HSJA), and the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) at NSU. The interview was conducted by Phillip Parker, president of NABJ at NSULA.
Desselle’s story traces his unconventional path into journalism, beginning with a part-time job at a deli and leading to a successful career in broadcast news, where he currently serves as a reporter for FOX26 in Houston.
“It all started with a roast beef sandwich,” Desselle recalled, reflecting on how a chance encounter at his deli job led to an opportunity at KALB News that ultimately changed the trajectory of his life.
Throughout the interview, Desselle emphasized the importance of attitude, adaptability and human connection in journalism. His journey, from videographer to anchor, demonstrates how persistence and willingness to learn can open unexpected doors.
“Opportunity can come from the most unlikely places,” Desselle shared. “If you stay prepared, remain teachable and keep a good attitude, you can go far.”
In addition to his professional success, Desselle highlighted the role of community, mentorship and service in shaping his career. A member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., he credits his involvement and upbringing with helping him stay grounded and connected to people throughout his 18-year career.
Phillip Parker, who led the interview, noted the importance of collaborative storytelling among student media groups.
“This project represents what student media at NSU is all about, collaboration, creativity, and telling impactful stories that inspire others,” Parker said.
The feature not only celebrates Desselle’s accomplishments but also serves as motivation for current students pursuing careers in media, communications, and the arts.
