NATCHITOCHES—A pair of school records, including a Southland Conference record, helped earn Northwestern State a pair of SLC weekly awards.
Record-breaking performances from Maygan Shaw and Vincente Graiani earned the SLC female and male track athlete of the award, respectively.
In the women’s 400-meter dash, the Shaw keeps breaking and re-breaking the school record in the event and broke the Southland record for the second time this season.
At the LSU Alumni Gold, she smashed her school record in the 400, clocking a 51.19, crushing her previous school and conference record of 51.87, which she set at the Leon Johnson NSU Invitational earlier this month.
If that wasn’t enough, she posted another season best as a member of the 4×400 relay team to round out the meet. The quartet of Shaw, Margaret Conteh, Samari Finney and Tranasia Jones clocked a 3:31.82, one of the best marks in school history and the best time this season.
Shaw wasn’t the only one who led a speedy relay team, as Graiani ran their way into the school record books, as the team of Graiani, Galen Loyd, William Achee and Desmond Duncan ran a 3:06.16, breaking a school record that had stood since 2003.
Graiani clocked a personal best in the men’s 800-meter run, running a 1:49.44, to place fourth in Baton Rouge this past weekend.
This is the third outdoor weekly award for Shaw this season, as well as taking one more in the indoor season, while Graiani won a weekly award to begin the indoor season.
The duo were both honored by the Southland as well on Jan. 30 after their performances at the Corky Classic.
Shaw, Graiani and the rest of Northwestern State travel to TCU on May 3, one final meet prior to the SLC Championships, which begin on May 15 in Houston on the campus of Rice.

For the third time this outdoor season, Maygan Shaw earned Southland Conference Female Track Athlete of the Week, shattering the SLC record—which she owned—in the women’s 400 at the LSU Alumni Gold. Vincente Graiani also took home the Male Track Athlete of the Week after being part of the 4×100 relay team that broke the school record and also nearly broke the school record in the 800-meter run, clocking a 1:49.44.
